Earl Rudolph "Bud" Powell (September 27, 1924 - July 31, 1966; aged 41) was an American jazz pianist and composer. Along with Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, and Dizzy Gillespie, Powell was a leading figure in the development of modern jazz. His virtuosity led many to call him the Charlie Parker of the piano. Powell was also a composer, and many jazz critics credit his works and his playing as having "greatly extended the range of jazz harmony".

Dieter Reith (February 25, 1938 - April 1, 2020; aged 82) was a German jazz pianist, organist, arranger and composer.
Reith became known in 1972 for composing and arranging the Olympic entry music for the Kurt Edelhagen orchestra together with Peter Herbolzheimer and Jerry van Rooyen. For this, these three musicians were awarded a gold record and the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon.

Vicente Montoliu Massana, better known as Tete Montoliu (28 March 1933 - 24 August 1997; aged 64) was a Spanish jazz pianist from Catalonia, Spain. Born blind, he learnt Braille music at age seven. His styles varied from hard bop, through afro-cuban, world fusion, to post bop. He recorded with Lionel Hampton in 1956 and played with saxophonist Roland Kirk in 1963. He also worked with leading American jazz musicians who toured in, or relocated to Europe including Kenny Dorham, Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster, Lucky Thompson, and Anthony Braxton.
Music for Perla is a solo album by pianist Tete Montoliu recorded in 1974 and released on the Danish label SteepleChase.

Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington (April 29, 1899 - May 24, 1974; aged 75) was an American composer, pianist, and leader of a jazz orchestra from 1923 through the rest of his life.
Ellington began a nearly thirty-year collaboration with composer-arranger-pianist Billy Strayhorn, whom he called his writing and arranging companion. With Strayhorn, he composed multiple extended compositions, or suites, as well as many short pieces.
William Thomas Strayhorn (November 29, 1915 - May 31, 1967; aged 51) was an American jazz composer, pianist, lyricist, and arranger, who collaborated with bandleader and composer Duke Ellington for nearly three decades. His compositions include "Take the 'A' Train", "Chelsea Bridge", "A Flower Is a Lovesome Thing", and "Lush Life".
Great Times! is an album by Duke Ellington's featuring duet performances with his arranger and musical partner Billy Strayhorn originally recorded for the Mercer Records label in 1950 and released on a 10" LP called Piano Duets. The sessions were re-released on Riverside as Great Times! in 1984 with tracks from an additional session with Oscar Pettiford.

Toshiko at Top of the Gate is a live jazz (quintet) album by Toshiko Akiyoshi. It was recorded at the Top of the Gate in New York City in July 1968 and was released by Nippon Columbia and Denon Records.

Oscar Emmanuel Peterson (August 15, 1925 - December 23, 2007; aged 82) was a Canadian jazz pianist, virtuoso and composer. He was called the "Maharaja of the keyboard" by Duke Ellington, simply "O.P." by his friends, and informally in the jazz community as "the King of inside swing". He released over 200 recordings, won seven Grammy Awards, as well as a lifetime achievement award from the Recording Academy, and received numerous other awards and honours. He is considered one of history's great jazz pianists, and played thousands of concerts worldwide in a career lasting more than 60 years.
