IN THE TRADITION VOLUME 2 - ANTHONY BRAXTON

Anthony Braxton (born June 4, 1945; age 76) is an African-American experimental composer, improviser, saxophonist, and multi-instrumentalist. Braxton grew up on Chicago’s South Side and was a key early member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. He won acclaim for his 1969 recording For Alto, the first full-length album of solo saxophone music.
In the Tradition Volume 2 is an album by Anthony Braxton recorded in 1974 and released on the Danish SteepleChase label in 1976. The album features Braxton's interpretations of jazz standards and followed the first volume recorded at the same sessions which was released in 1974.

Samuel Carthorne Rivers (September 25, 1923 - December 26, 2011; aged 88) was an American jazz musician and composer. He performed on soprano and tenor saxophones, bass clarinet, flute, harmonica and piano.

MEDITATIONS - JOHN COLTRANE

John William Coltrane (September 23, 1926 - July 17, 1967; aged 40) was an American jazz saxophonist and composer. Working in the bebop and hard bop idioms early in his career, Coltrane helped pioneer the use of modes and was at the forefront of free jazz. He led at least fifty recording sessions and appeared on many albums by other musicians, including trumpeter Miles Davis and pianist Thelonious Monk.
Meditations is a 1966 album by John Coltrane. The album was considered the "spiritual follow-up to A Love Supreme." It features Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders as soloists, both playing tenor saxophones. Much of the recording is avant-garde, featuring extensive passages in free rhythm and extended saxophone techniques such as honked and overblown notes, as well as multiphonics. This would be the last Coltrane recording with long-time partners drummer Elvin Jones and pianist McCoy Tyner.

PHAROAH'S FIRST - PHAROAH SANDERS

Pharoah Sanders (born Farrell Sanders, October 13, 1940; age 81) is an American jazz saxophonist. A member of John Coltrane's groups of the mid-1960s, Sanders is known for his overblowing, harmonic, and multiphonic techniques on the saxophone, as well as his use of "sheets of sound". He has released over 30 albums as a leader and has collaborated extensively with Leon Thomas, Alice Coltrane and Rinai Maurice, among others.
Pharoah's First is the debut album by Pharoah Sanders, recorded in New York City at the loft of audio engineer Jerry Newman on September 10, 1964, and first released in 1965 on the ESP-Disk label. The album was originally issued with the title Pharaoh and was later re-released with the titles Pharoah, Pharoah Sanders Quintet, and Pharaoh's First.

Charles Mingus Jr. (April 22, 1922 - January 5, 1979; aged 56) was an American jazz double bassist, pianist, composer and bandleader. A major proponent of collective improvisation, he is considered to be one of the greatest jazz musicians and composers in history, with a career spanning three decades and collaborations with other jazz musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Herbie Hancock.
Mingus in Europe Volume II is a live album by the jazz bassist and composer Charles Mingus, recorded in 1964 in Germany and released on the Enja label in 1980.
