TOUCHDOWN - BOB JAMES

Robert McElhiney James (born December 25, 1939; age 84) is an American jazz keyboardist, arranger, and record producer. He founded the band Fourplay and wrote "Angela", the theme song for the TV show Taxi. Among his most well known recordings are "Nautilus", "Westchester Lady", "Tappan Zee", and his version of "Take Me to the Mardi Gras".
Touchdown is the sixth album by Bob James, released in 1978 on his Tappan Zee label thru Columbia. The album's title is a reference to this being James' sixth solo album (a touchdown being worth six points in American football).

Joe Pass (January 13, 1929 – May 23, 1994; aged 65) was an American jazz guitarist. Pass is well known for his work stemming from numerous collaborations with pianist Oscar Peterson and vocalist Ella Fitzgerald.

Edwin James Costa (August 14, 1930 – July 28, 1962; aged 31) was an American jazz pianist, vibraphonist, composer and arranger. In 1957, he was chosen as DownBeat jazz critics' new star on piano and vibes – the first time that one artist won two categories in the same year. Costa had an eight-year recording career, during which he appeared on more than 100 albums.
Eddie Costa: Memorial Concert is an album by live recording of the memorial concert for Eddie Costa, who died at the young age of 31. It features performances by the Clark Terry Quartet and the Coleman Hawkins Sextet.

Steve Lacy (July 23, 1934 - June 4, 2004; aged 69), born Steven Norman Lackritz in New York City, was an American jazz saxophonist and composer recognized as one of the important players of soprano saxophone. Coming to prominence in the 1950s as a progressive dixieland musician, Lacy went on to a long and prolific career.
Soprano Sax is the debut album by Steve Lacy which was released on the Prestige label in 1958. It features performances by Lacy, Wynton Kelly, Buell Neidlinger and Dennis Charles.

Malcolm Earl "Mal" Waldron (August 16, 1925 – December 2, 2002; aged 77) was an American jazz pianist, composer, and arranger.
Moods is an album by Mal Waldron, recorded in 1978, and released by the Enja label. Originally released as a double LP, the CD reissue omitted three of the piano solos (which were included as bonus tracks on the CD reissue of One-Upmanship) to fit onto one compact disc and altered the running order; a later CD reissue reinstated Waldron's "Soul Eyes".

Kenny Barron (born June 9, 1943; age 81) is an American jazz pianist, who has appeared on hundreds of recordings as leader and sideman and is considered one of the most influential mainstream jazz pianists since the bebop era.
Night and the City is a live album by Charlie Haden and Kenny Barron, recorded at the Iridium Jazz Club in 1996 and released on the Verve label.

SPIRITUAL MOMENTS - MASAHIKO TOGASHI

Masahiko Togashi (富樫 雅彦, March 22, 1940 - August 22, 2007; aged 67) was a Japanese jazz percussionist and composer.
He worked with Sadao Watanabe, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and Tony Scott in the 1950s, then founded the ensemble Jazz Academy in 1961 with Hideto Kanai, Masabumi Kikuchi, and Masayuki Takayanagi. He was an early free jazz leader in Japan. Togashi lost the use of his legs in an accident in 1969, and designed a new kit that would allow him to continue playing. Later associations included performing or recording with Paul Bley, Don Cherry, Jack DeJohnette, Charlie Haden, Steve Lacy, Gary Peacock, Masahiko Sato, and Yuji Takahashi.
Spiritual Moments is an album by Masahiko Togashi, recorded in 1981,Tokyo and released on the Paddle Wheel label.

Arthur Stewart Farmer (August 21, 1928 – October 4, 1999; aged 71) was an American jazz trumpeter and flugelhorn player. He also played flumpet, a trumpet–flugelhorn combination especially designed for him.
Perception is an album by Art Farmer's Quartet, featuring performances recorded in 1961 and originally released on the Argo label. This was Farmer's second album as leader for Argo, and the first recording on which he played only flugelhorn.

RENAISSANCE - ENRICO RAVA

Enrico Rava (born 20 August 1939; age 84) is an Italian jazz trumpeter. He started on trombone, then changed to the trumpet after hearing Miles Davis.
His first commercial work was as a member of Gato Barbieri's Italian quintet in the mid-1960s in the late 1960s he was a member of Steve Lacy's group. In the 1970s and 1980s, he worked with John Abercrombie, Andrea Centazzo, Gil Evans, Richard Galliano, Joe Henderson, Joe Lovano, Pat Metheny, Michel Petrucciani, Cecil Taylor, and Miroslav Vitouš.
Renaissance is an album by Enrico Rava, recorded in Rome, 2002 and released on the Japanese Venus Records.

NEFERTITI - MILES DAVIS

Nefertiti is a studio album by the jazz trumpeter and composer Miles Davis. It was released in March 1968 through Columbia Records. The recording was made at Columbia's 30th Street Studio over four dates between June 7 and July 19, 1967, the album was Davis' last fully acoustic album. Davis himself did not contribute any compositions – three were written by tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter, two by pianist Herbie Hancock, and one by drummer Tony Williams.
