L'AUTOMNE À PÉKIN - YASUAKI SHIMIZU & THE SAXOPHONETTES

Yasuaki Shimizu (清水靖晃 born 9 August 1954; age 67) is a Japanese composer, saxophonist and producer. He is known for his interpretations of the music of J.S. Bach, in particular the "Cello Suites 1-6" re-arranged for and performed on tenor saxophone. Since 1981 he has composed, produced or arranged for artists as diverse as jazz vocalist Helen Merrill, composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, and DJ Towa Tei. During this time he has lived in London, Paris and Tokyo.
In 1983, he created the Yasuaki Shimizu & Saxophonettes project—initially a one-man band—which has since become the main focus of his recording activities. His first recording as the Saxophonettes was L'Automne à Pékin (1983), a tribute to the Golden Age of Hollywood.

Ramon "Mongo" Santamaria Rodriguez (April 7, 1917 - February 1, 2003; aged 85) was a Cuban percussionist and bandleader who spent most of his career in the United States. Primarily a conga drummer, Santamaria was a leading figure in the pachanga and boogaloo dance crazes of the 1960s. His biggest hit was his rendition of Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man", which was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998.

Brian Robert Setzer (born April 10, 1959; age 63) is an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He found widespread success in the early 1980s with the 1950s-style rockabilly group Stray Cats, and revitalized his career in the early 1990s with his swing revival band, the Brian Setzer Orchestra.
The Dirty Boogie is the third album from the swing band The Brian Setzer Orchestra. The album is considered as the breakthrough for the band. Seven of the album's tracks are covers of songs written and originally made popular between 1952 and 1962.

Bernard "Barney" Jean Wilen (4 March 1937 - 25 May 1996; aged 59) was a French tenor and soprano saxophonist and jazz composer. His career was boosted in 1957, when he worked with Miles Davis on the soundtrack for the Louis Malle film Ascenseur pour l'Echafaud (Elevator to the Gallows). In 1959, Wilen wrote his two soundtracks Un Temoin Dans la Ville and Jazz sur scene with Kenny Clarke. He wrote a soundtrack for Roger Vadim's film Les Liaisons Dangereuses two years later, working with Thelonious Monk.

Harold Galper (born April 18, 1938 ; age 83) is an American jazz pianist, composer, arranger, bandleader, educator, and writer. He worked with Chet Baker and Stan Getz and accompanied vocalists Joe Williams, Anita O'Day, and Chris Connor. Between 1973 and 1975, Galper played in the Cannonball Adderley Quintet replacing George Duke. For 10 years (1980-1990) he was a member of Phil Woods's quintet.
Children of the Night is an album by Hal Galper released on the Double-Time Records (a.k.a. Double-Time Jazz) in 1997.

Donald Johnson Ellis (July 25, 1934 - December 17, 1978; aged 44) was an American jazz trumpeter, drummer, composer, and bandleader. He is best known for his extensive musical experimentation, particularly in the area of time signatures. Later in his life he worked as a film composer, contributing a score to 1971's The French Connection and 1973's The Seven-Ups.
Electric Bath is an album by trumpeter Don Ellis recorded in 1967 and released on the Columbia label. Electric Bath was a Grammy nominee in 1968 and that same year won "Album of the Year" in the annual Down Beat readers poll. This album was Don's first studio recording with his big band and his first Columbia Records release. It was produced by noted jazz record producer John Hammond.

Jean-Luc Ponty (born 29 September 1942; age 79) is a French jazz violinist and composer.
In 1964, at age 22, he released his debut album, Jazz Long Playing. He performed on stage in Basel, Switzerland, with string players Stuff Smith, Stéphane Grappelli, and Svend Asmussen. John Lewis of the Modern Jazz Quartet invited Ponty to perform at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1967, which led to a recording contract with the World Pacific label. That year also brought Sunday Walk (1967), the first collaboration between Ponty and Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen.

Hugo Mario Montenegro (September 2, 1925 – February 6, 1981; aged 55) was an American orchestra leader and composer of film soundtracks. His best-known work is derived from interpretations of the music from Spaghetti Westerns, especially his cover version of Ennio Morricone's main theme from the 1966 film The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. He composed the musical score for the 1969 Western Charro!, which starred Elvis Presley.
Come Spy with Me is an album by Hugo Montenegro and his orchestra, released in 1966 on RCA Records.
