TURNING POINT - LONNIE SMITH

Lonnie Smith (July 3, 1942 - September 28, 2021; aged 79), styled Dr. Lonnie Smith, was an American jazz Hammond B3 organist who was a member of the George Benson quartet in the 1960s. He recorded albums with saxophonist Lou Donaldson for Blue Note before being signed as a solo act. He owned the label Pilgrimage, and was named the year's best organist by the Jazz Journalists Association nine times.
Turning Point is the second album by Lonnie Smith recorded in 1969 and released on the Blue Note label.

Stanley William Turrentine (April 5, 1934 - September 12, 2000 ; aged 66) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist. He began his career playing R&B for Earl Bostic and later soul jazz recording for the Blue Note label from 1960, touched on jazz fusion during a stint on CTI in the 1970s. In the 1960s Turrentine was married to organist Shirley Scott, with whom he frequently recorded, and he was the younger brother of trumpeter Tommy Turrentine.

He was among the most influential early bebop musicians, which included other greats such as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Bud Powell. Gordon's height was 6 feet 6 inches (198 cm), so he was also known as "Long Tall Dexter" and "Sophisticated Giant". His studio and performance career spanned over 40 years.

Larry Young (also known as Khalid Yasin ; October 7, 1940 - March 30, 1978; aged 37) was an American jazz organist and occasional pianist. Young's early work was strongly influenced by the soul jazz of Jimmy Smith, but he later pioneered a more experimental, modal approach to the Hammond B-3.
Into Somethin' is a 1965 album by Larry Young, his debut for Blue Note records. It features a quartet of Young, tenor saxophonist Sam Rivers, guitarist Grant Green and drummer Elvin Jones.

Wayne Shorter (born August 25, 1933 ; age 88) is an American jazz saxophonist and composer. Shorter came to prominence in the late 1950s as a member of, and eventually primary composer for, Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. In the 1960s, he joined Miles Davis's Second Great Quintet, and then co-founded the jazz fusion band Weather Report. He has recorded over 20 albums as a bandleader.
JuJu is the fifth album by American jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter. It was released in July 1965 by Blue Note Records. It features a rhythm section of pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Reggie Workman and drummer Elvin Jones, all of whom had worked extensively with Shorter’s fellow tenor saxophonist John Coltrane.

In addition to his work as a bandleader Parlan was known for his contributions to the Charles Mingus recordings Mingus Ah Um and Blues & Roots.
Happy Frame of Mind is an album by Horace Parlan featuring performances recorded for Blue Note in 1963, but not released under Parlan's name on the label until 1986. The session was originally released under Booker Ervin's name in 1976 as part of the Blue Note 2-LP set Back from the Gig and later released as originally intended.

Donaldson Toussaint L'Ouverture Byrd II (December 9, 1932 - February 4, 2013 ; aged 80) was an American jazz and rhythm & blues trumpeter and vocalist. A sideman for many other jazz musicians of his generation, Byrd was known as one of the rare bebop jazz musicians who successfully explored funk and soul while remaining a jazz artist. As a bandleader, Byrd was an influence on the early career of Herbie Hancock.
Free Form is an album by Donald Byrd featuring Byrd with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Butch Warren, and Billy Higgins recorded in 1961 and released on the Blue Note label later in 1966.
