Rahsaan Roland Kirk (August 7, 1935 - December 5, 1977; aged 42) was an American jazz multi-instrumentalist who played tenor saxophone, flute, and many other instruments. He was renowned for his onstage vitality, during which virtuoso improvisation was accompanied by comic banter, political ranting, and the ability to play several instruments simultaneously.
Blacknuss is an album by Rahsaan Roland Kirk. It was recorded in 1971 and released by Atlantic Records.

Paul Gonsalves (July 12, 1920 – May 15, 1974; aged 53) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist best known for his association with Duke Ellington. At the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival, Gonsalves played a 27-chorus solo in the middle of Ellington's "Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue," a performance credited with revitalizing Ellington's waning career in the 1950s.

He first gained attention in the "Four Brothers" sax section of Woody Herman's big band, afterward enjoying a long solo career, often in partnership with fellow saxmen Gerry Mulligan and Al Cohn.

Four separate saxophonists (three tenors and an altoist) are featured on a ballad apiece on this album, all of them accompanied by pianist Stanley Cowell, bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Roy Haynes. Art Pepper is quite passionate on "Over the Rainbow," John Klemmer really stretches out (over 12 1/2 minutes) on "God Bless the Child," Johnny Griffin finds warmth in "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" and Joe Henderson investigates "Good Morning, Heartache."

BALLADS BY FIVE - VARIOUS ARTISTS

In the 1980s, a recording came out titled Ballads by Four, which had a ballad feature apiece for tenors Johnny Griffin ("Smoke Gets In Your Eyes"), Joe Henderson ("Good Morning Heartache"), John Klemmer ("God Bless the Child") and altoist Art Pepper ("Over the Rainbow"). All were recorded during a four-day period with fine support from pianist Stanley Cowell, either Cecil McBee or John Heard on bass, and drummer Roy Haynes. For the CD reissue, not only are second versions of "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" and "Over the Rainbow" from Griffin and Pepper included, but also tenorman Joe Farrell's exploration of "Body and Soul" which did not make it onto the original album.

Luc Houtkamp (The Hague, December 4, 1953; age 68) is a Dutch saxophonist, composer and orchestra leader. Houtkamp has been playing as a saxophonist/improviser since 1972 and has collaborated with, among others, Han Bennink, Ernst Reijseger, Fred van Hove, Martin Blume, Gilius van Bergeijk, Konrad Bauer, Johannes Bauer and George Lewis. His music is characterized by an extremely structured and conceptual approach to improvisation.
In Chicago is an album by Luc Houtkamp which was recorded in Chicago in 1997 and released on the Entropy Stereo Recordings label.

Billy Harper (born January 17, 1943; age 79) is an American jazz saxophonist, "one of a generation of Coltrane-influenced tenor saxophonists" with a distinctively stern, hard-as-nails sound on his instrument. Harper has played with some of jazz's greatest drummers; he served with Art Blakey's Messengers for two years (1968–1970); he played very briefly with Elvin Jones (1970), he played with the Thad Jones/ Mel Lewis Orchestra in the 1970s, and was a member of Max Roach's quartet from 1971–1978.
Somalia is an album by Billy Harper. It was released in 1995 on the Evidence label.

Joe Henderson (April 24, 1937 - June 30, 2001; aged 64) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist. In a career spanning more than four decades, Henderson played with many of the leading American players of his day and recorded for several prominent labels, including Blue Note, Milestone, and Verve.
The Kicker is the first album by jazz tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, released on the Milestone label. It was recorded on August 10, 1967, with one track originating from a later session on September 27, and contains performances by Henderson with trumpeter Mike Lawrence, trombonist Grachan Moncur III, pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Louis Hayes.
