NEWPORT '59 - BARNEY WILEN Quartet

Bernard "Barney" Jean Wilen (4 March 1937 - 25 May 1996; aged 59) was a French tenor and soprano saxophonist and jazz composer. His career was boosted in 1957, when he worked with Miles Davis on the soundtrack for the Louis Malle film Ascenseur pour l'Echafaud (Elevator to the Gallows). In 1959, Wilen wrote his two soundtracks Un Temoin Dans la Ville and Jazz sur scene with Kenny Clarke. He wrote a soundtrack for Roger Vadim's film Les Liaisons Dangereuses two years later, working with Thelonious Monk.
Newport '59 is an album by Barney Wilen Quartet, released in 1991 on the Fresh Sound label. Recorded at Newport Jazz Festival, July 4th 1959 and others.

HUSH 'N' THUNDER - YUSEF LATEEF

Yusef Abdul Lateef (October 9, 1920 – December 23, 2013; aged 93) was an American jazz multi-instrumentalist, composer, and prominent figure among the Ahmadiyya Community in America.
Although Lateef's main instruments were the tenor saxophone and flute, he also played oboe and bassoon, both rare in jazz, and non-western instruments such as the bamboo flute, shanai, shofar, xun, arghul and koto.
Hush 'N' Thunder is an album by Yusef Lateef recorded in 1972 and released on the Atlantic label.

峰 厚介(みね こうすけ、1944年2月6日 - 78歳)は日本のテナー、ソプラノサックス奏者。1963年にアルト・サックス奏者として音楽活動を開始し、1969年に菊地雅章バンドへ参加。ジョン・コルトレーンに心酔し、1971年よりテナー・サックスも吹き始める。1978年には、本田竹広らとジャズ・フュージョングループとして人気を博したネイティブ・サンを結成。
菊地 雅章(きくち まさぶみ、1939年10月19日 - 2015年7月6日 75歳没)は、日本のジャズ・ピアニスト、キーボード奏者。「プーさん」の愛称で親しまれている。実兄の菊地雅春は作曲家。実弟の菊地雅洋はジャズピアニスト。1978年にはマイルス・デイヴィスともセッションを行ったが、その時の音源は今も公式には未発表となっている。
本作「DUO」は、1994年3月27日 東京で録音され、ヴァーヴ・レーベルからリリースされた。

MIDNIGHT WALK - ELVIN JONES

Elvin Ray Jones (September 9, 1927 - May 18, 2004; aged 76) was an American jazz drummer of the post-bop era. He served in the United States Army from 1946 to 1949 and subsequently played in a Detroit house band led by Billy Mitchell. He moved to New York City in 1955 and worked as a drummer for John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Teddy Charles, Bud Powell and Miles Davis. From 1960 to 1966, he was a member of the John Coltrane quartet (along with Jimmy Garrison on bass and McCoy Tyner on piano), a celebrated recording phase, appearing on such albums as My Favorite Things, A Love Supreme, Ascension, and Live at Birdland.
Midnight Walk is a jazz album by Elvin Jones recorded in 1966 and released on the Atlantic label. It features Jones in a quintet with his brother Thad on trumpet, tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, pianist Abdullah Ibrahim(Dollar Brand) and bassist Don Moore.

Joseph Salvatore Lovano (born December 29, 1952; age 69) is an American jazz saxophonist, alto clarinetist, flautist, and drummer. He has earned a Grammy Award and several mentions on Down Beat magazine's critics' and readers' polls.
Ten Tales is a studio album by Joe Lovano and Aldo Romano. The album was released on November 29, 1994 and consists of 10 original instrumental compositions recorded in Paris in 1989.

Kenneth Clarke Spearman (January 9, 1914 - January 26, 1985; aged 71), nicknamed Klook, was an American jazz drummer and bandleader. A major innovator of the bebop style of drumming, he pioneered the use of the ride cymbal to keep time rather than the hi-hat, along with the use of the bass drum for irregular accents ("dropping bombs").
Bohemia After Dark is an album by Kenny Clarke, featuring the earliest recordings by Cannonball Adderley and Nat Adderley, produced for the Savoy label.(This album is reissue cover)

Shirley Scott (March 14, 1934 – March 10, 2002; aged 67) was an American jazz organist. Her music was noted for its mixture of bebop, blues and gospel elements. She was known by the nickname "Queen of the Organ". Influenced by gospel and blues, she played soul jazz in the 1960s with Stanley Turrentine, who became her husband during the same decade; the couple divorced in 1971.
Soul Searching is an album by Shirley Scott for the Prestige label which was recorded in 1959.

Eddie Baccus Sr. (November 17, 1936 ; age 86) is a hardbop organist based in Cleveland, Ohio. He played and recorded with Rahsaan Roland Kirk whom he met at the Ohio School of the Blind. His son is Eddie Baccus Jr. an alto-sax player based in Maryland.
