INDEED! - LEE MORGAN

Edward Lee Morgan (July 10, 1938 - February 19, 1972; aged 33) was an American jazz trumpeter and composer. One of the key hard bop musicians of the 1960s, Morgan came to prominence in his late teens, recording on John Coltrane's Blue Train (1957) and with the band of drummer Art Blakey before launching a solo career. After leaving Blakey for the final time, Morgan continued to work prolifically as both a leader and a sideman with the likes of Hank Mobley and Wayne Shorter, becoming a cornerstone of the Blue Note label.
Indeed! is the debut album by jazz trumpeter Lee Morgan released on the Blue Note label in 1957. It was recorded on November 4, 1956 and features performances by Morgan, Clarence Sharpe, Horace Silver, Wilbur Ware and Philly Joe Jones.

Harold Floyd "Tina" Brooks (June 7, 1932 - August 13, 1974; aged 42) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist and composer best remembered for his work in the hard bop style.
True Blue is a jazz album by Tina Brooks recorded on June 25, 1960, and released on the Blue Note label. In the hard-bop idiom, it was Brooks' only performance as leader to be released during his lifetime, and features performances by Brooks, Freddie Hubbard, Duke Jordan, Sam Jones and Art Taylor.

Theodore "Fats" Navarro (September 24, 1923 - July 6, 1950; aged 26) was an American jazz trumpet player. He was a pioneer of the bebop style of jazz improvisation in the 1940s. He had a strong stylistic influence on many other players, including Clifford Brown.
Navarro played in the Andy Kirk, Billy Eckstine, Benny Goodman, and Lionel Hampton big bands, and participated in small group recording sessions with Kenny Clarke, Tadd Dameron, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Coleman Hawkins, Illinois Jacquet, Howard McGhee, and Bud Powell.

Donaldson Toussaint L'Ouverture Byrd II (December 9, 1932 - February 4, 2013 ; aged 80) was an American jazz and rhythm & blues trumpeter and vocalist. A sideman for many other jazz musicians of his generation, Byrd was known as one of the rare bebop jazz musicians who successfully explored funk and soul while remaining a jazz artist. As a bandleader, Byrd was an influence on the early career of Herbie Hancock.
Blackjack is an album by Donald Byrd featuring performances by Byrd with Sonny Red, Hank Mobley, Cedar Walton, Walter Booker, and Billy Higgins recorded in 1967 and released on the Blue Note label as BLP 4259. The CD reissue included one bonus track recorded in 1963.

Lou Donaldson (born November 1, 1926; age 95) is an American semi-retired jazz alto saxophonist. He is best known for his soulful, bluesy approach to playing the alto saxophone, although in his formative years he was, as many were of the bebop era, heavily influenced by Charlie Parker.
Lou Takes Off is an album by Lou Donaldson recorded for the Blue Note label and performed by a sextet also featuring trumpeter Donald Byrd, trombonist Curtis Fuller, pianist Sonny Clark, bassist Jamil Nasser and drummer Art Taylor.

John Lenwood "Jackie" McLean (May 17, 1931 - March 31, 2006; aged 74) was an American jazz alto saxophonist, composer, bandleader, and educator, and is one of the few musicians to be elected to the DownBeat Hall of Fame in the year of their death.
New and Old Gospel is an album by Jackie McLean recorded in 1967 and released on the Blue Note label. It features McLean in a quintet with saxophonist Ornette Coleman (here on trumpet), pianist LaMont Johnson, bassist Scotty Holt and drummer Billy Higgins.

GRASS ROOTS - ANDREW HILL

Andrew Hill (June 30, 1931 - April 20, 2007; aged 75) was an American jazz pianist and composer.
Jazz critic John Fordham described Hill as a "uniquely gifted composer, pianist and educator" although "his status remained largely inside knowledge in the jazz world for most of his career." Hill recorded for Blue Note Records for nearly a decade, producing a dozen albums.
Grass Roots is a studio album by Andrew Hill featuring performances recorded in 1968 and released on the Blue Note label. The original album features Hill with trumpeter Lee Morgan, tenor saxophonist Booker Ervin, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Freddie Waits performing five of his originals. The 2000 CD reissue added alternate versions of three of the pieces (and two additional compositions) .

SPEAK LIKE A CHILD - HERBIE HANCOCK

Herbert Jeffrey Hancock (born April 12, 1940; age 82) is an American jazz pianist, keyboardist, bandleader, composer, and occasional actor. Hancock started his career with trumpeter Donald Byrd's group. He shortly thereafter joined the Miles Davis Quintet, where he helped to redefine the role of a jazz rhythm section and was one of the primary architects of the post-bop sound. In the 1970s, Hancock experimented with jazz fusion, funk, and electro styles, utilizing a wide array of synthesizers and electronics.
Speak Like a Child is the sixth album by Herbie Hancock, recorded and released by Blue Note Records in 1968. Featuring Hancock's arrangements for an unusual front line of Jerry Dodgion on alto flute, Peter Phillips on bass trombone and Thad Jones on flugelhorn. The cover photo depicts Hancock in silhouette kissing his wife-to-be, Gigi Meixner.
