BARNEY WILEN QUINTET

Bernard "Barney" Jean Wilen (4 March 1937 - 25 May 1996; aged 59) was a French tenor and soprano saxophonist and jazz composer. His career was boosted in 1957, when he worked with Miles Davis on the soundtrack for the Louis Malle film Ascenseur pour l'Echafaud (Elevator to the Gallows). In 1959, Wilen wrote his two soundtracks Un Temoin Dans la Ville and Jazz sur scene with Kenny Clarke. He wrote a soundtrack for Roger Vadim's film Les Liaisons Dangereuses two years later, working with Thelonious Monk.
Barney Wilen Quintet is an album by Barney Wilen which was recorded in Paris, 1957 and original released on the Guild du Jazz label.

Sahib Shihab (born Edmund Gregory; June 23, 1925 – October 24, 1989; aged 64) was an American jazz and hard bop saxophonist (baritone, alto, and soprano) and flautist.
Soul Mates is an album by saxophonists Charlie Rouse and Sahib Shihab which was recorded in 1988 and released on the Uptown label in 1993.

Pharoah Sanders (born Ferrell Lee Sanders; October 13, 1940 – September 24, 2022; aged 81) is an American jazz saxophonist. A member of John Coltrane's groups of the mid-1960s, Sanders is known for his overblowing, harmonic, and multiphonic techniques on the saxophone, as well as his use of "sheets of sound". He has released over 30 albums as a leader and has collaborated extensively with Leon Thomas, Alice Coltrane and Rinai Maurice, among others.
Heart is a Melody is a live album led by Pharoah Sanders recorded in 1982 and released on the Theresa label.

John Arnold Griffin III (April 24, 1928 - July 25, 2008; aged 80) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist. Nicknamed "the Little Giant" for his short stature and forceful playing, Griffin's career began in the early 1940s and continued until the month of his death.
Body And Soul is a live album led by Johnny Griffin recorded live in Paris, 1967 and released on the Moon Records, 1989.

ATYMONY - BILL SAXTON Quartet

William Edward Saxton (born June 28, 1946 in New York City) is an American hard bop tenor saxophonist.
He studied clarinet, composition and arrangement at the New England Conservatory in Boston, graduating in 1973 and worked with Pharoah Sanders, Jackie McLean and Bennie Maupin.
His playing has been strong and confident, but also essentially standard hard bop in a Wayne Shorter/John Coltrane mode. Saxton can be heard on recordings more often as a sideman than a leader, his own albums include 1984's "Beneath the Surface" and 1994's "Atymony".

FOCUSING IN - DAN FAULK

Dan Faulk (born 1969) is a jazz saxophonist, composer, and educator.
In 1992, he recorded Focusing In for Criss Cross Jazz. It was a quartet recording, with Barry Harris (piano), Rufus Reid (bass), and Carl Allen (drums).
Faulk played tenor and soprano saxophones on James Spaulding's Blues Nexus. Faulk was part of trombonist J. J. Johnson's band in the late 1990s. Faulk has also been professor of music at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

Joshua Redman (born February 1, 1969; age 54) is an American jazz saxophonist and composer. He is the son of jazz saxophonist Dewey Redman (1931–2006).
Redman won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition in 1991, and began focusing on his musical career. He was signed by Warner Bros. Records and issued his first self-titled album in the spring of 1993, which subsequently earned Redman his first Grammy nomination.
