GASLINI PLAYS SUN RA - GIORGIO GASLINI

Giorgio Gaslini (22 October 1929 – 29 July 2014; aged 84) was an Italian jazz pianist, composer and conductor. He collaborated with leading American soloists, such as Anthony Braxton, Steve Lacy, Don Cherry, Roswell Rudd, Max Roach, but also with the Argentinian Gato Barbieri and Frenchman Jean-Luc Ponty. He also adapted the compositions of Albert Ayler and Sun Ra for solo piano, which the Soul Note label issued. He also composed the soundtrack of Michelangelo Antonioni's La notte (The Night, 1961).

His improvisations draw from the traditions of jazz and other genres, especially Western classical music, gospel, blues, and ethnic folk music.

Vicente Montoliu Massana, better known as Tete Montoliu (28 March 1933 - 24 August 1997; aged 64) was a Spanish jazz pianist from Catalonia, Spain. Born blind, he learnt Braille music at age seven. His styles varied from hard bop, through afro-cuban, world fusion, to post bop. He recorded with Lionel Hampton in 1956 and played with saxophonist Roland Kirk in 1963. He also worked with leading American jazz musicians who toured in, or relocated to Europe including Kenny Dorham, Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster, Lucky Thompson, and Anthony Braxton.
Catalonian Nights Vol. 2 is a live album by Tete Montoliu Trio recorded in Spain in 1980 and released on the Danish label, SteepleChase in 1989.

Georges Arvanitas (June 13, 1931 - September 25, 2005; aged 74) was a French jazz pianist and organist. He was born in Marseille, a child of Greek immigrants from Constantinople. His influences included Bud Powell and Bill Evans. In the late 1950s, he featured on albums by Art Farmer and Louis Hayes, and played with Dexter Gordon and Johnny Griffin.

Josef Erich Zawinul (7 July 1932 - 11 September 2007: aged 75) was an Austrian jazz keyboardist and composer. First coming to prominence with saxophonist Cannonball Adderley, Zawinul went on to play with Miles Davis and to become one of the creators of jazz fusion, a musical genre that combined jazz with rock. He co-founded the groups Weather Report and The Zawinul Syndicate.

Thelonious Sphere Monk (October 10, 1917 - February 17, 1982; aged 64) was an American jazz pianist and composer. He had a unique improvisational style and made numerous contributions to the standard jazz repertoire, including "'Round Midnight", "Blue Monk", "Straight, No Chaser", "Ruby, My Dear", "In Walked Bud", and "Well, You Needn't". Monk is the second-most-recorded jazz composer after Duke Ellington.
Piano Solo is a 1954 album by Thelonious Monk, recorded in Paris, France, on June 4, 1954, originally for a radio broadcast. The original album was released on the French Disques Vogue label as a 10" LP.

GOING PLACES - MICHEL SARDABY

Michel Sardaby (born 4 September 1935; age 87) is a French jazz pianist. Born in Fort-de-France, Martinique, he moved to Paris.
Sardaby's first album Five Cat`s Blues was recorded in October 1967 in Paris with 5 compositions created by the pianist. In 1970, he led a trio comprising Percy Heath and Connie Kay for his second album, Night Cap. A 1972 New York recording has him leading a line-up comprising Richard Davis, Billy Cobham and Ray Barretto (Sound Hills Records 1997). His album, Gail (1974), won the 1976 Prix Boris Vian.
For his 1989 album, Going Places, he was accompanied by Rufus Reid and Marvin "Smitty" Smith, and in 1993, he recorded with his quintet, which comprised Ralph Moore, Louis Smith, Peter Washington and Tony Reedus.
